Here are some library activities that can keep you busy while you are at home. This webpage will be updated weekly with resources and activities that will complement what our students have been doing in library during the year.
Activities by grade: Pre-K/K: Pick a book off your book shelf or from the public library audio/ebook resource. Adults can also help you access Destiny's electronic and audio book selection through this website's menu. Have your adult read the book while you act out the scenes.
1st -2nd Grades: Have an adult help you access Destiny's ebooks. Choose a book that looks like something you normally wouldn't choose. Discuss the book cover and talk about these things: 1. What is it about the cover that would make you not choose this book? 2. Did you enjoy the book once you heard the story? 3. Could the illustrator have done something different to make the cover more appealing to all readers? 4. Design a new book cover to appeal to all readers and explain to your adult why you designed it.
3rd Grade: Don't judge a book by it's cover Many of the 3rd grade classes have been talking about why certain books are designed to appeal to specific genders through cover art. This can be due to the color scheme, character choice, and even title. Many students will not choose to read a book based on these elements, but often, once the story is read, they will see that the story is written for all readers, and not a specific gender. To build off what we have been doing in class, choose a book in the Destiny catalog (you can get an adult's help) or through DC's public library ebook catalog (or any other ebook system), that wouldn't normally appeal to you.
