Battle of the Books Information
Battle of the books is a fun trivia contest for students who want to take their love of reading to the next level. Students in 4th and 5th grades who decide to take the challenge will read the books from the list above and will take a trivia challenge test with approximately 180 questions from the books above. If we have a tie, there will be a tie breaking battle to see who finishes in the top 10 positions. The top 10 scorers will go on to represent Janney in the district level competition.
Students will be responsible for getting the books on their own and reading the books on their own time. Mrs. Epperson will host two information sessions with tips on how to organize information from the books to help learn the books, and anyone interested can attend. It won’t be required.
The first information session will be on Tuesday, September 17 at lunch. Interested 4th and 5th graders should bring their lunch to the library.
The second information session will be on Thursday, September 19 at lunch. Interested 4th and 5th graders should bring their lunch to the library.
Once the team is selected, BOB students will sign a contract and be required to attend weekly Battle of the Books “BOB” meetings during lunch/recess on the designated date until the district battle is over.
The Janney Battle of the Books competition will take place during lunch/recess on Wednesday, December 11, 2019.
The district Battle of the Books competition will take place on Friday, March 13, 2020 at 8:30 am at Dunbar High School. Parents/guardians will be responsible for getting their children to the competition on time and transporting them back to school at the end of the competition.

Important info:
Battle of the Books (BOB) is a fun trivia contest for students in 4th and 5th grades who want to take their love of reading to the next level.
Advisors are Mrs. Lyndsey Epperson and Mrs. Mary Thomas.
Once Mrs. Epperson and Mrs. Thomas have a list of students that have signed up, they will determine a date for the Janney battle of the books. That date will be announced at a later time.
Students who sign up will be required to read all of the books from the list above.
Students will be required to get the books on their own. Students can work together to get the books through the DC public library (DC public librarians can put the books on hold for you, or you can do it online. Ask parents for help if necessary). Maryland and Virginia libraries might also have the books. Students can share books among themselves as they are reading them.
Meetings will be determined by teacher availability.
Once you decide to participate, a parent permission slip will be sent home.
The top 10 winners from the Janney battle of the books will form the Janney team and will represent our school at the DCPS Elementary battle of the books in March.
Students will be required to follow the code of conduct.
